9 Plant Shelves That Save Floor Space
Plants are great. Tripping over pots in every corner is not. If your floors are starting to feel like a greenhouse aisle, plant shelves let you keep the greenery and get your space back.
1. Slim wall-mounted floating shelves
Floating shelves are one of the easiest ways to clear the floor. Look for narrow versions made to hold small to medium pots—brands like Sorbus and similar “floating plant shelf” sets are designed exactly for this. Stack a few vertically near a sunny window so you turn one wall into a plant zone instead of scattering pots everywhere.
2. Ladder-style leaning plant shelf
A ladder shelf leans against the wall and gives you three to five tiers of space without taking up a big footprint. There are plenty of wood ladder-style stands on Amazon, like the Yaheetech foldable 3-tier stand or similar ladder racks, that hold several pots but still tuck into a corner. These work well behind a sofa or in a hallway that doesn’t have room for a big cabinet.
3. Tall corner plant stand
Corners are usually dead space, which makes them perfect for plants. Tall, triangular plant stands are shaped to tuck into a corner while giving you three or more shelves. Home centers carry metal three-tier corner stands that go over 5 feet tall and hold multiple pots without blocking walkways. They’re especially handy in small living rooms.
4. Narrow tiered metal stand
If you’ve got a lot of smaller plants, a tall, narrow metal stand with wire shelves gives you height without bulk. Stands like the GDLF 5-tier metal plant stand or other slim metal tower styles are built to hold several pots but still only use a narrow strip of floor. Wire shelves also let light and water move through instead of creating soggy spots.
5. Rolling utility cart turned plant station
A three-tier rolling cart basically becomes mobile plant storage. Utility carts like the Kingrack or SimpleHouseware metal carts are strong enough for multiple small pots and can be rolled toward a window for light, then back out of the way. It’s a good option if your best natural light is in high-traffic spots.
6. Compact IKEA plant stands
If you’d rather buy something ready-made, IKEA’s OLIVBLAD and DAKSJUS plant stands are designed for tight spaces. They have small round or rectangular tiers stacked vertically, so you can fit several plants in the footprint of one. They’re rated for indoor or outdoor use, which is nice if you’re shuffling plants seasonally.
7. Wall-mounted planters for narrow walls
Wall planters are perfect when you’re short on both floor and shelf space. Brands like Braid & Wood sell simple wall-mounted planters that hold small pots or air plants and sit almost flat against the wall. A cluster of three over a console or in a hallway gives you greenery without sacrificing surfaces.
8. Mini greenhouse on a console or dresser
If you love humidity-loving plants, a tabletop mini greenhouse lets you keep several plants together on top of one piece of furniture. IKEA’s ÅKERBÄR greenhouse is small, budget-friendly, and meant for indoor plants that like warmth and moisture. Set it on a dresser or buffet and you’ve got a whole plant “zone” with zero extra floor space.
9. Stools or benches as plant perches
Short on cash but not on creativity? A basic wood stool or narrow bench pulled from another room can double as a plant stand. Many plant people actually buy small benches and stools specifically for this, instead of traditional stands. The key is choosing pieces with open legs so the floor still feels open underneath.
