Woman says her ex would not even answer her breakup message — but somehow still found time to hold her sentimental plants hostage for a month

A Reddit user says a relationship that had gotten serious fast ended in the most ridiculous way possible: not with a screaming breakup, but with a grown man refusing to return a collection of plants she says meant a lot to her. In the original post, the 29-year-old said she had only been seeing the man, 35, for a few months, but things had moved quickly enough that they were already talking about moving in together. Then she went back to her home country for two weeks and, according to her, barely heard from him at all. When she got back and tried to talk through where the relationship was headed, she realized what he wanted did not line up with what she wanted, so she sent a message ending things and asking that they simply swap belongings back.

She wrote that a full week passed without him even opening the breakup message. After that, she followed up and suggested the easiest possible option: he could just leave her plants outside at a certain time, and she would do the same with anything of his. He eventually replied, but instead of setting a pickup time, he called her “hostile.” She said she answered calmly, asked what part of her message sounded hostile, and tried again to organize a handoff. Then he stopped opening her messages too. By the time she posted, she said nine days had passed since her last message and she still had no plants and no clear answer.

What made the whole thing sting more was that these were not just random houseplants she could shrug off and replace. She said they were “insanely sentimental,” and explained in comments that she only trusted him to care for them while she was away because he also kept a lot of healthy plants of his own. That detail is part of why she told Reddit she could not understand the game he seemed to be playing. In her telling, this did not need to involve any contact, emotion, or drama. He could have set them outside, sent one text, and been done with it. Instead, she said, it felt like he was using them as bait.

The update, posted April 3, 2026, showed that the standoff lasted far longer than it should have. She wrote that she sent one final message telling him which week she would be in town and asking him to let her know when she could collect the plants. He still did not respond. When Friday came and went with nothing, she finally called him herself. To her surprise, he answered — only to tell her it was not a good time and that, if she had given him notice, he could have arranged something. She wrote that line felt almost surreal considering she had been trying to get the plants back for a full month by then.

According to the update, once she offered yet again to simply pick them up herself or have him leave them outside, he insisted on dropping them off personally and called it “the least I can do.” She met him at a park instead of her home, with friends sitting nearby in view while he brought the plants over. She said he then spent about 10 minutes talking about all the awful things that had happened to him recently and how bad his luck had been. In her version, the whole conversation still revolved around him, even though she had not come there to comfort him or have some closure talk. She had come for the plants. After that, he gave her what she described as a quick awkward hug and left.

The ending was small, but it clearly mattered to her. She wrote that the plants were not in the same condition she had left them in, but they were still healthy enough to save. She said some had black spots that looked like overwatering or root rot, but after a little care they were already starting to do better. The update closed on the line that probably mattered more than anything else in the whole story: she had her “plant babies” back, had not heard from him since, and felt lighter with both the plants and the man finally out of limbo.

What do you think — was this really about the plants, or did the month-long silence make it obvious he was trying to keep one last bit of control after the breakup?
