10 Things You Should Never Plug Into a Generator

When the power goes out, a generator feels like the simplest fix in the world. Then the lights flicker, the engine hunts up and down, and something expensive starts making a smell you never want to smell again. A generator is just another power source, and some loads do not play nice with it.
1. A Home Through A Dryer Outlet

Backfeeding a house by plugging the generator into a wall outlet is how people hurt linemen and start fires. It can energize circuits you think are off, and it can put power onto the utility lines outside. You also get zero real protection from your main breaker, because the whole setup is backwards.
If you want to run house circuits, the right tool is an inlet box with an interlock or a transfer switch. That is panel work, permits in many places, and often a licensed electrician job. The cheaper “suicide cord” option is not a bargain when it melts a receptacle or gets someone killed.
2. Any Appliance With A Damaged Cord

Storm season is when you drag out the freezer, the shop light, and that old sump pump with the nicked jacket on the cord. On utility power, a breaker might trip fast enough. On a generator with long cords and sketchy connections, you can end up with arcing at the plug that sounds like frying bacon.
Replace the cord end or the whole cord before you plug it in, and keep connections off wet ground. Use outdoor rated cords, and if a plug feels hot to the touch, shut it down and fix the problem. A few bucks in parts beats a scorched outlet and a dead generator receptacle.
3. Space Heaters And Electric Water Heaters

Resistance heat is a fuel hog. A 1500 watt space heater will eat up generator capacity fast, and it will run nearly nonstop when it is 10 degrees and the wind is pushing through the seams. The generator will sound loaded down, and you will be filling the tank like it is a second job.
Use non-electric heat during an outage if you have it, like a properly vented gas fireplace, a wood stove, or even just closing off rooms and dressing for it. If you only have electric heat, a generator can still help, but focus on the blower for a gas furnace or a small heated zone instead of trying to heat the whole house with coils.
4. Central Air Conditioning Without Soft Start

The outdoor condenser wants a huge surge of power to start. A portable generator that looks big enough on paper will still bog, trip, or stall when the compressor kicks. If it does start, the voltage drop can make the motor run hot, which shortens its life in a hurry.
If you need cooling for health or livestock, run a window unit or a portable AC sized for a single room. For whole-house AC, talk to an HVAC pro about a soft-start kit and talk to an electrician about a proper inlet and transfer equipment. It is a planned upgrade, not a “lights just went out” move.
5. Sump Pumps On Long, Skinny Cords

A sump pump is the thing you want most in a thunderstorm, and it is also the thing that gets starved by voltage drop. If you run it on a 100-foot, 16 gauge cord, the pump can sit there humming, not moving water, cooking its windings. You find out when the pit is full and the basement smells like wet drywall.
Use a short, heavy cord, think 12 gauge for most setups, and keep the plug connection dry and elevated. If your pump is hardwired or tied into the panel, do not improvise. Get a proper transfer setup installed so the pump circuit can run safely.
6. Sensitive Electronics Without Surge Protection

Some generators put out dirty power, especially if they are older, lightly loaded, or the engine speed is hunting. That shows up as flickering LEDs, buzzing phone chargers, and TVs that click off and on. Laptops and modern TVs do not love that.
Use a quality surge protector at minimum, and better yet a UPS for computers, routers, and anything that hates sudden dips. If you plan to power electronics a lot, an inverter generator is usually worth the extra money because it holds steadier voltage and frequency.
7. Refrigerators And Freezers Right Away

Right after an outage, people panic-plug the fridge and freezer at the same time, plus every light in the place. The generator is cold, the oil is thick, and you hit it with multiple compressor starts at once. That is when the engine lugs hard and the breaker pops.
Give the generator a few minutes to warm up with a small load, then add big loads one at a time. A fridge or freezer can also coast for a while if the doors stay shut, so you can stagger run time. Run the freezer for a bit, shut it off, then run the fridge, instead of trying to do everything at once.
8. Battery Chargers With “Boost” Modes

Car battery chargers and shop chargers can pull a lot more than you expect, especially in boost or engine start modes. The draw is jumpy, and it can make a small generator surge. Some chargers also spit electrical noise back into the line and make lights flicker.
If you need to charge batteries during an outage, use a basic charger at a normal rate, and keep the generator load steady. The exception is small tool battery chargers, the ones for drills and saws. Those are usually fine on a generator if you are not also trying to run half the house.
9. Cheap Power Strips And Indoor Extension Cords Outdoors

Power strips are for a desk, not a muddy yard in the rain. They are easy to overload, easy to crush under a door, and the plug ends love to sit in puddles. Indoor cords get stiff in cold weather and the insulation cracks when you bend them around a porch post.
Use outdoor rated cords sized for the load, and use weather resistant cord covers or connection boxes if you have to leave a plug joint outside. Keep cords out of walkways so nobody trips and yanks a running generator off a tailgate. If you need more outlets, use a heavy duty outdoor splitter, not a $5 strip from a junk drawer.
10. A Generator Plugged Into Another Generator

It sounds goofy, but people really do try to “stack” power by feeding one generator from another, or by running a battery power station off a generator while the power station runs loads. At best you waste fuel turning power into power with losses. At worst you confuse bonding and grounding, overload cords, or smoke an inverter.
Pick one source for the loads. If you want quiet power at night, charge a battery station during the day from the generator, then unplug it and let it run the small stuff by itself. Keep it simple and you will have fewer mystery problems at 2 a.m.
A generator runs best when it has steady loads, decent cords, and one clear job to do. If you are relying on it every year, spend a little time before the next storm labeling cords, checking plugs, and planning what circuits matter. The calm setup always works better than the frantic one.
