The Buyers Started Measuring My Shed Before the House Was Even Under Contract

The sale of my house got awkward fast when the buyers started acting a little too settled in before anything was even official. They had come by to look at the property, which was normal enough, and at first it felt like a regular showing. But somewhere along the way, the attention shifted from simply looking at the house to acting like they were already making plans for parts of it. The moment that really got me was seeing them measuring my shed even though the house was not under contract yet.

That is the kind of thing that makes you stop and think, hold on a second. Looking is one thing. Asking questions is one thing. But pulling out a tape measure and sizing up my shed like they were already deciding what would go where was a totally different kind of energy. It changed the whole feel of the situation right away, because now it was not just people touring a property they might want to buy. It felt like they had already skipped ahead in their minds and started treating the place like the deal was basically done.

That is what made it so uncomfortable for me. The shed was still mine. The yard was still mine. The whole property was still mine. Nothing had closed, and nothing had even been locked in. So standing there watching somebody measure it like they were planning storage, figuring out a layout, or checking whether their stuff would fit just felt way too premature to ignore. It was not that they had glanced at it or asked about it. It was that they had started physically sizing it up before they had even bought the place.

It also changed the whole tone of the showing in a way that was hard to shake. A buyer being interested is one thing, and obviously that is what any seller wants. But when that interest starts looking a little too possessive too early, it can make you feel weirdly pushed out of your own space before you have even agreed to anything. It is one thing for someone to imagine where their things might go if they get the house. It is another thing entirely to start measuring my shed while I am still standing there as the owner.
